This year, entrants in Avenue’s 2012 Design Contest were encouraged to design beyond the four-by-four-by-four-feet parameters of the first two annual competitions. This year, we simply asked for functional pieces of home decor.
Although the winning designs are all tables, we received many submissions that weren’t, including a wine rack and a kitchen island. However, the following five were deemed the most functional and best crafted by our judges: Alana Gannon-Schilf, owner of Inspired Home Interiors; Robert Lederer, associate professor of University of Alberta’s industrial design department; and Kevin Porter, chair of NAIT’s environmental design technology department.
These designs come from a new batch of winners, except for Robert Faulkner, who has been a finalist every year, and in fact has two pieces in the 2012 short-list. Here are the finalists:
>> Chute by Robert Faulkner - GRAND PRIZE WINNER
>> Jessica Table by Jesse Poettcker - READERS CHOICE AWARD WINNER
Congratulations to Robert Faulker, the grand prize winner of a trip for two to New York courtesy of WestJet, with accommodations and passes to the International Contemporary Furniture Fair; and to Jesse Poettcker, winner of the Readers Choice Award.
