You don’t have to run around the city to try it all, because two local food enthusiasts, Sharon Yeo and Mack Male, bring the trucks to one spot.
Throughout the year, the duo organize What the Truck?! evenings, when Edmonton's food trucks and carts come together in one location with their best wheels forward.
“We take care of the logistics, permitting, insurance and all the stuff that needs to happen so they can focus on the food,” says Yeo. The first two were so successful that some vendors sold out and nearby cafes and restaurants saw spikes in sales from the influx of people.
“We wanted it to be accessible and pedestrian-friendly to bring people downtown — a form of small-scale revitalization,” says Male, a well-known advocate of urban issues. “These [pedestrian-friendly events] need to take place to truly revitalize the downtown.”
The next What the Truck?! is on Aug. 3 on the Victoria Promenade (100 Ave. and 121 St.). Visit whatthetruck.ca for future dates and times.
