The University of Alberta continues to refresh its art and design curriculum with the recent hiring of two new faculty members, Daniela Schlüter and Maria Whiteman.

Working in printmaking and photography, respectively, Schlüter and Whiteman strengthen and expand the department’s already outstanding reputation — a reputation that draws many excellent visual artists to the university from around the world.

The U of A has maintained an international reputation as a major printmaking centre and has a long history with modernist esthetics. Schlüter and Whiteman, however, bring a contemporary edge to existing practices.

This month, Betsy Boone, who chairs the department, has organized an exhibition of their work to welcome them to the community. “By showing how both artists work in media that have long histories, and expanding that media in new directions, we want to introduce them to everybody,” explains Boone.

Schlüter’s and Whiteman’s exhibitions are at the Fine Arts Building Gallery from March 2 to 27. ualberta.ca/artdesign
