Painting between the styles of abstraction and representation, Shawn Serfas approaches his art with a sense of exploration.
“Abstraction has a plentiful and diverse history in the Prairies, concerning [the region’s] connection with the land,” says Serfas, a lecturer at the University of British Columbia’s Okanagan campus. “My esthetic and creative practice is based upon this relationship. My work has always been well-received and supported from this region.”
Concerned with the experiential quality of painting, Serfas addresses how we view our modified natural landscape, as filtered through the environmental impacts of human development.
The exhibition “Field + Canal” includes three Serfas series: Field + Canal, Plaything and Revolution, all of which stem from his take on humanity’s relationship with land.
The exhibition runs from March 13 to 26 at Agnes Bugera Gallery. agnesbugeragallery.com
