There was an air of excitement at the brand new Art Gallery of Alberta at its exclusive opening gala on January 29. More than 600 guests, almost all donned in black, eagerly entered
its glass doors in anticipation of exploring the monumental structure, as well as getting a first look at the premier exhibitions. Los Angeles-based architect Randall Stout designed the 85,000-square-foot, four-storey gallery with metallic swoops inspired by the northern lights, and a blend of zinc, stainless steel and glazing to reflect Edmonton’s dramatic weather patterns.
The design displays a contrast between the metals like the changes in the seasons. “It is really gratifying to speak to people who experience the building for the first time,” says Gilles Hébert, executive director of the AGA. “They gain a whole new appreciation for how we are able to sustain truly great exhibition galleries and wonderful public spaces under one roof.” Proceeds from the sold-out gala go to future AGA projects and operations.
