It started as a retrospective of SCTV, the groundbreaking sketch comedy show shot in Edmonton for its most successful years. But Avenue’s event quickly became more of a reunion.

In ripped SCTV crew jackets or carrying memorabilia from the old ITV studios (now Global Edmonton), the men and women who made pop culture history, including “laugh track man” Harvey Popowich and associate producer Carole Henson, joined 265 fans to watch hours of TV clips at the Metro Cinema.

Although the show’s co-star, Joe Flaherty, cancelled his appearance due to illness, he recorded a message supporting the magazine’s campaign to create a permanent SCTV monument in town, for which $7,000 was raised that night. Mayor Stephen Mandel, who began his speech with “caroo-coo-coo” in vein of the McKenzie Brothers, said: “Canadiana really came alive with these people … We should do things like this more often”.
