Interstellar Rodeo
July 27–29, Hawrelak Park, interstellarrodeo.com
If you ask Shauna de Cartier how many hours it took to organize this new three-day concert, she won’t hazard a guess. “Countless hours,” says the president of Toronto-based indie music label Six Shooter Records, “both awake and while sleeping.”
Cartier dreamed of gourmet food and wine pairings instead of the regular mini doughnuts. And when her focus shifted to the stage, she landed the inaugural festival such acts as Randy Newman and Blue Rodeo. But she and co-organizers are most excited about a performance by Richard Buckner, who’d once married an Edmontonian and lived in the city.
According to Cartier, Buckner once promised to never tour Canada again. But Buckner remembers it differently: “I think what I might have said was that I’d never get married again in Canada.”
As far as why he’s attending the rodeo, he says, “If they sell corn dogs at this event, I’m there!”
Uh oh. Organizers may need to add that one to the menu.
