What are the challenges of singing outdoors?

When singing inside, like at the Jubilee, the acoustics of the room will speak back to you. You have a sense of being enveloped in your own sound. Singing outside is hard because you can’t gauge whether you’re loud enough.

On the flipside, are there things to worry about while singing indoors?

In my very first year with Edmonton Opera, I was performing in the chorus for La Travialta and we were near the end of the first or second act. Suddenly, all of the lights went out, the power shut down. For about a minute and a half, the orchestra played and singers kept going on. Then, they stopped the production for about 20 minutes and just as they were going to send everyone home, the lights were back on and everyone continued.

How do you exercise for opera?

The number one thing you shouldn’t do is overuse your voice, and I spend my whole day talking as a sixth grade teacher. I try to not over-project, and to speak in a tone that’s good for my voice. Most people speak too high or too low for their voices.
