Call Me Mayor ... Maybe?

Two thousand people packed the Shaw Conference Centre today, all eager to hear whether Mayor Stephen Mandel would run again for a fourth term in this fall's municipal election. The place was full of strong opinions from both sides, speculating on his next move. But when Mandel took the stage, he announced he's still undecided. But that doesn't mean his passion or opinions on current affairs are any less strong.  "Today, I'll talk about what I plan to stand up for and the state of the city," said Mandel. He continued to give a candid account of the...

Art That Moves: Simons Aurora

More than 100 chains of light and several dozen sculptural glass vessels hang from the northwest corner of Simons in West Edmonton Mall, undulating with the flow of people. According to artist and architect, Philip Beesley, whose work has appeared internationally, the art installation, Simons Aurora, is an interactive environment. It looks like a combination of ice crystals and a coral reef — it even acts like the latter — the crystalline tentacles are fitted with hundreds of sensors, which...

Shane Chartrand's New Menu at Murrieta's

A waiter reaches over, flicks on a lighter and the crème brûlée on a nearby plate becomes illuminated in blue light. The light dances for a minute or two before extinguishing, creating a caramelized layer of burnt liqueur and a smell like that of sweet pastry, which fills a half of Murrieta’s Bar and Grill and lingers until the last bite. The plate belongs to Craig Simpson, former Edmonton Oiler, current lead NHL analyst on CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada and Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Simmer Fine Wine & Spirits, a company...

Indulging in Food Pairings

Waiting with forks in hand, the crowd filled the lobby of the Delta Edmonton South and flowed into the parking lot. Slow Food Edmonton paired local food producers with restaurants and vineyards to form Indulgence 2012, an event that filled 22 stations with an abundance of bite-sized and sometimes much bigger portions. And the proceeds from the sale of tickets went towards food-related projects developed/funded by the...

Winners of FAVA's Film Awards

In honour of it 30th anniversary, the Film and Video Arts Society Alberta hosted FAVA Fest from March 20 to 24, which culminated with the first-ever Awards of Excellence for local filmmakers in five categories. “It’s a silly thing, but sometimes people think that after many years they don’t need acknowledgement," says FAVA President (and filmmaker) Eva Colmers. "To be asked to come on stage, to look at the audience and to receive a full-fledged thank you, that shows we want them to continue." ...

SCTV Monument: One Month Later

In January, Avenue called Edmontonians to action. We asked whether our readers would support a monument celebrating the popular sketch comedy show SCTV, which was produced out of the Capital Region during its most successful years. The response was overwhelmingly positive — with more than 600 signatures in total — and, one month later, Avenue editor Steven Sandor, will be presenting ideas for a possible SCTV monument at...

Whisky Cocktails

A slice of chorizo sausage hangs gracefully from the cocktail glass. But, it's the ingredients within that really set this drink apart. The spice of the chorizo sausage melds perfectly with the smoky kick of the malt whisky, fresh horseradish, veal jus and Clamato in one of Sabor Divino’s signature cocktails. The drink, inspired by chef Shawn Hicks and prepared by Nick Tooke, is very popular according to co-owner Christian Mena, especially with the ladies. Jamie MacKenzie, regional manager of North America...

Vegan Tales: Noorish

We sit down at a table in the corner of Noorish, a restaurant that opened just off Whyte Avenue on 109 street this fall. The tables on all sides are full on a Wednesday evening. Our waitress is so upbeat I’ve never heard anyone that enthusiastic about food. And I love food. But she takes it to another level, looking at us with wide eyes and a knowing smile, saying she’s very confident we’ll enjoy ourselves. And, she says, we’re about to experience something we’ve never experienced before. She’...

Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition

When you think of the Titanic, thoughts of Celine Dion’s “My Heart will Go On” and a Leonardo Di Caprio and Kate Winslet-style romance might come to mind. But while the story of that romance is fiction, Alexandra Klingelhofer knows the real stories behind the famous shipwreck. As vice president of collections for Premier Exhibitions and RMS Titanic Inc., Klingelhofer oversees exhibits like Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition, which is...
