Zap, Wax, Rinse

Emily: Just like trends in body hair change, so do the products we use to get rid of body hair. These days, it’s easier than ever to remove unwanted body hair at home.

Rita: Spas and salons are a nice splurge, but they’re not always affordable — or convenient. So, at-home options are a nice alternative.

E: Veet has been in the hair-removal business for decades. It’s provided women — and some men — with affordable, independent, and relatively easy ways to dissolve, erase and wash off unwanted hair.

Worth Every Penny?

Emma: Let’s start with a disclaimer of sorts: if money is an object to you, stop reading now.

Rita: Yes, this certainly is a luxury skin care line. But, in its defense, it’s intended to work as an alternative to laser treatments or surgery.

E: So, with that being said, let’s go through the different individual products from the N6 Furfuryladenine line, which, for a name, is as clear as mud.

Photoshop Your Face

Salons and spas in Edmonton are a dime a dozen. So when Carla Feagan opened Divine Body Spa, she knew she had to do something to stand out. Enter Intraceuticals Oxygen, a technology that rejuvenates skin in a process one could describe as an "airbrush facial." It's like Photoshopping your face — sort of.

A Lifetime of Beauty

Emma: Today, we’re changing gears a bit. We’re going to share with you our all-time top favourite beauty products.

Rita: And, believe us, it wasn’t an easy task! It was hard to whittle down this final list of “go-to” items, but here it is.

The Saga Concludes

Emma: Now, we’re picking up where we left off, reviewing some products from the new Kiehl’s store in Southgate Centre. The new extension is beautiful — really elegant and clean — if you have yet to check it out…

Rita: But right now, we’re checking out the Superbly Restorative Argan Body Cleansing Oil. The fair trade argan oil comes from a Moroccan womens’ co-op, by the way. This is a unique product: an oil that morphs into a creamy lathering cleansing oil.

Keeling Over Kiehl's

Rita: So, as we mentioned in the last entry, we’ve been trying out some offerings from the new Kiehl’s store in Southgate Centre.

Emma: Let’s start this time by talking about the hair products.

R: We test drove Kiehl’s Sunflower Color Preserving line, which is great for those of us who are self-professed salon junkies.

E: Yes, well, neither one of us is a stranger to hair dye — that’s for sure!

Great First Impression

Rita: Unless you’ve been living under a construction site, you’ve noticed the huge billboards and signs leading up to the grand opening of Southgate Centre’s new extension. Thirty new retailers fill the more than 150,000 square feet of additional shopping space. And some fabulous stores are cutting the ribbon alongside the mall.

Emma: Some of the stores are the first of their kind in Alberta, such as Kiehl’s (Since 1851), although it’s had a counter at the Holt Renfrew downtown for a while.

Body Works

Emma: How many spas do you know with a fulltime doctor on staff? May we introduce you to Urban Body CosMedics. This downtown Edmonton establishment goes beyond basic skin-care, offering personalized medical treatment programs for a number of skin conditions.

Rita: The medical spa carries three different product lines. One is Obagi — a doctor prescribed skin care line for serious conditions, including long-term difficult acne, discolouration, and serious sun damage. Another is the skin-friendly makeup line Jane Iredale.

No Mousy Colours Here

Rita: Two years ago, a star was born. In May of 2007, a chic New York style salon opened its doors in one of our city’s trendiest districts, the charming 124th street.

Emma: Mousy Brown’s is gorgeous! The entryway is open, with high ceilings, brick walls and lots of store-front windows. The aesthetic of the salon echos the philosophy that guides the treatments and services it offers, the way the clients are treated and the lines of product it carries.

Earth's Goodness

Emma: First of all, if you haven’t checked out the new Carbon Environmental Boutique on 104th Street and 101th Avenue, you have to make the trip. Walking through those doors and into the airy, bright, bamboo-decorated store is like stepping into another world.

Rita: It truly is an incredible space, where the connection between eco-friendly and body-friendly is the obvious focus. Every product in there - from toxin-free paint, to recycled and organic furniture, to chemical-free facial and body washes - nourishes the planet and your health.
