Passport to Dining on 124th Street

A new Edmonton tradition is spreading from its Whyte Avenue roots and expanding to 124th Street. Next Sunday (Sept. 16), Edmonton foodies will get the chance to sample from the menus of more than a dozen 124th Street eateries, and raise money for a good cause in the process. On the heels of Red Shoe Crawls held in 2011 and earlier this year on the Whyte Avenue strip, the decision's been made to bring the event to the north side of the river. For $40 (or $100 for a family pass), you can roam participating 124th...

Joe Flaherty Cancellation

Avenue regrets to announce that Joe Flaherty has come down with an illness and will not be able to fly to Edmonton for Thursday’s SCTV Retrospective at the Metro Cinema at the Garneau. “We got the news Wednesday morning,” said Avenue Editor Steven Sandor. “We have the footage selected, the speakers lined up, the beer in the cooler, the theatre booked. And we decided, as the event is a tribute to a wonderful time in Edmonton, that the show will go on.” Tickets for the event are $25 and include two drink tickets that can be...

Carrol Deen's Got the Blues — And Loves It

The weather turned cold and heavy clouds threatened rain. But that didn’t deter blues music lovers, many of whom had been waiting in line since early in the morning, for prime seating.  By the time the opening act belted out its first song that evening on Aug. 24, Hawrelak Park’s outdoor Heritage Amphitheatre was filled with a hearty, warmly-dressed crowd, photographers at the foot of the stage snapping shots of the musicians and people moving to the beat on the dance floor.  Edmonton’s Blues Festival...

Blomme's Charitable Endeavours are For the Birds

A baby robin pokes his head out of a small shoebox, looking anxiously around at foreign surroundings. He’s the first “patient” of the day at the newly-opened Wildlife Hospital in north Edmonton, brought in by a woman who took him away from neighbourhood children who were playing with him. Kim Blomme calms him with gentle strokes while she checks for injuries, then gets help feeding him formula through a narrow tube attached to a syringe. At about two weeks old, he likely fell out of the nest and, while he’s not hurt, he’s still too young to fend for himself...

AGA Wins Architect Top Honour

For the third time, California-based architect Randall Stout has won the American Architecture Award. Given out by the Chicago Athanaeum, it is the highest accolade for architects in the U.S. But this time it’s for a Canadian venture, the Art Gallery of Alberta, which in its two years since opening has become a signature of Edmonton. He previously won in 2005 for designing the Hunter Museum of American Art in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and in 2007, for the Taubman...

Edmonton To Get Hit With Anvil, Twice

In the late ’ 70s and early ’80s, one of the most influential metal bands was also one of the most commercially unsuccessful. Anvil — three thrashers hailing from Toronto — might have been the harbingers to Slayer and Metallica, but they were largely forgotten until 2008, when Rebecca Yeldham, producer of films The Motorcycle Diaries...

Could NHL Labour Talks Affect Downtown Arena Plans?

This week, NHL owners and members of the Players’ Association continue their negotiations in hopes of hammering out a new labour deal. But, this is for sure: The next time the Edmonton Oilers hit the ice, it will be under the framework of a yet-to-be-decided Collective Bargaining Agreement. And, as it stands, there is a nuclear option of another labour stoppage. A lockout forced the cancellation of the entire 2004-05 season, and who knows how fans would react to the second major work stoppage in less than a decade. Yet, in this...

124th Street Lounge Offers a Taste of Montreal

Thanks to Fadi Smaidi, we may soon have a new name for the 124 Street district. And that’s “Little Montreal.” Smaidi’s Montreal roots are evident at Dahlia’s Mediterranean Bistro, where the Middle Eastern dishes were augmented with smoked-meat sandwiches and St-Viateur Bagels, which are flown in for a dedicated cadre of customers. And you always know if the Habs are winning their fair share of games, because you may notice a  Montreal Canadiens flag hanging in the window now and then. (Dahlia's is also home to the falafel pita wrap which...

Shane Chartrand's New Menu at Murrieta's

A waiter reaches over, flicks on a lighter and the crème brûlée on a nearby plate becomes illuminated in blue light. The light dances for a minute or two before extinguishing, creating a caramelized layer of burnt liqueur and a smell like that of sweet pastry, which fills a half of Murrieta’s Bar and Grill and lingers until the last bite. The plate belongs to Craig Simpson, former Edmonton Oiler, current lead NHL analyst on CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada and Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Simmer Fine Wine & Spirits, a company...
