Emily: Just like trends in body hair change, so do the products we use to get rid of body hair. These days, it’s easier than ever to remove unwanted body hair at home.

Rita: Spas and salons are a nice splurge, but they’re not always affordable — or convenient. So, at-home options are a nice alternative.

E: Veet has been in the hair-removal business for decades. It’s provided women — and some men — with affordable, independent, and relatively easy ways to dissolve, erase and wash off unwanted hair.

R: I haven’t used Veet products in several years, but the do-it-yourself products have come a long way since then.

E: I didn’t think the at-home wax strips would even compare to an aesthetician, but the results were very comparable.

R: In addition, when you throw the cost savings into the equation, it’s hard to discount the DIY Veet line.

E: I’ve found most wax strips aren’t sticky enough. They leave too many hairs behind while aggravating sensitive skin.

R: That’s true, but the Veet ones were as close to the quality of materials used in a salon as I’ve seen yet.

E: And, here’s a tip: try heating up the wax strips in the microwave before you use them. Put them in for just 20 seconds on high, and they’ll come out nice and sticky. You can also cut the strips before you heat them, because smaller pieces are easier to manipulate, and they don’t hurt as much!

R: Veet also makes hair-removal lotions.

E: Which usually mean less pain, more smell.

R: So, before you take off running, choking on the fumes that come to mind, give Veet a chance because times have changed.

E: Luckily, getting rid of body hair doesn’t require burning your nose hair on the noxious chemical scent like it used to. The last time I tried a hair-removal lotion (a decade ago), I was huddled in the bathroom with two fans running, the window wide open, and I still had to hold my breath.

E: Fortunately, Veet’s new line, Velvet Rose Fragrance and Essential Oils, actually smells like its name. So, Rita, what were your results like?

R: I was quite surprised with how well this cream works. It takes three to six minutes of waiting (painlessly, might I add), you just wipe the hair away effortlessly! A week after the process, there is little to no re-growth. To me, that’s impressive.

E: No kidding! And for those of us with sensitive skin, I think this is a better alternative. R: Exactly! But a word of advice: if you are going to choose between the Velvet Rose Fragrance Cream Remover and the Cucumber Fragrance Cream, I recommend that you go with Velvet Rose. Unlike its counterpart, the “cucumber scent” was a bit obnoxious and painful to my nose. And I found the smell stayed with me long after I washed it away.

E: With that being said, these products work beautifully, and most importantly, they’re effective. With summer just around the corner, this is a good way to prepare your skin for exposure.

Veet “Velvet Rose Fragrance Cream Remover” and "Velvet Rose Fragrance and Essential Oils Wax Strips” are available at local drugstores for about $10.
